PRO-04 Eric Johnson

About this lesson plan

This lesson plan focuses on a few aspects of Eric Johnson's style. The examples focus on how Eric uses wide intervals, different picking techniques and his use of chords. Even if the student hasn't heard Eric's music it's still worth going through this lesson for the techniques used. The Teacher's Guide focuses the discussion on how the student can use the ideas behind the licks in their own playing. The goal isn't to just give your student licks they can use in their improvisation but to provide your student with fresh ways to think about guitar.

Your student will learn:

  • How to use different voicings for chords
  • Practice hybrid picking
  • How to effortlessly shift between different Pentatonic positions
  • How to use triads in fresh ways

If your student takes an interest to this style of playing then after finishing this lesson it would be a good idea to run through some of Eric's songs such as Cliffs of Dover.
