CI-004 Solo over ugly chords

About this resource

This challenge will help your student learn to think about their note choices when playing over any chord. Soloing over an 'ugly' chord forces the student to really think about which notes are the best choices and which notes do/don't work well. It's a great way to test your student's understanding of chord theory and intervals. Your student will learn why certain chords sound appealing and why other chords don't.

CT-003 Chords using the thumb

About this resource

It's good practice to ensure that your student learns to play guitar with correct thumb positioning at the back of the neck. However, there are times when it's appropriate to reach the thumb over the neck to play certain chords. This challenge will teach your student how to play those chords as well as how to come up with similar chords using the thumb.

New lesson plan on triads, sus and add chords

A new guitar lesson plan series has been created focusing on chords. This series will give you musical examples for various types of chords for your students to see the chords in context. Instead of giving your student a chord chart with the different chords, you can talk about each type of chord and show how each could be used in music. This is a great way to learn chords because your student will learn to identify chord types by ear in songs.

The first lesson plan in this series covers basic chords such as triads, suspended and add chords. More lesson plans on other chord types will be available soon.

Access the lesson plan here: CHD-01 Triads, Sus & Add Chords

CHD-01 Triads, Sus & Add Chords

About this lesson plan

This guitar lesson plan will help you introduce a few different chord types to your student. This material is set out to help your student learn to recognize each chord type when used in music. Each chord is used in a different music example so your student can see how they can use the chord as well. The idea behind the lesson is that your student will eventually begin to recognize chords in songs by ear. Rather than simply giving your student a chord chart with each type of chord, you can use this lesson plan to introduce each type of chord and your student can learn to each the unique characteristic of each type.

The chords covered in this lesson plan are:

  • Major and minor triads
  • Augmented triad
  • Sus4
  • Minor add9
  • Add11
  • Add6

The included instruction sheet will give you ideas on how to use the lesson plan. The instructions will give you a guide on how to explain the chords to your student and how to get them thinking about each chord's unique sound.
