BQA-02 Students Who Don't Pay On Time

It’s worth mentioning straight away that almost 100% of your students will pay up-front and on time every time. However, it is possible that eventually you will get a student who seems to always ‘forget’ to bring their money and promises to pay next time. This guide has been compiled to protect you, on the rare occasion that you get one of these students. This guide will provide you with multiple actions you can take to get your student to start paying promptly in every lesson.

What to expect

When you offer lessons to a new student, there is the slim possibility that they are the type of person who has trouble paying on time. The following points are signs to look out for, to help you identify these ‘non-paying’ students:

  • Student seems to always ‘forget’ to bring their money to the lesson
  • They ask during the lesson if they can pay double next week
  • They give you excuses- blaming either the bank or their work for not paying them on time
  • If they have a direct transfer to your bank account, you notice that the payments have stopped coming in
  • They offer to pay by cheque

Most of the time people are honest, and you will occasionally have a student who forgets to bring their money. That’s okay. But if you start to notice a pattern in the student’s behavior, it’s time to take control of the situation or you could end up not getting paid at all.

When a prospective student first contacts you about guitar lessons, they will most likely have a few questions. How you handle these questions can be the difference between gaining a valuable student and losing one to a competitor. Some people take your answers very seriously, so if they don’t hear what they want to hear, they will have no hesitation in moving on to the next tutor. Using Online Teacher Directories to your advantage

This guide will cover everything related to online teacher directories. It will explain what they are, how to use them and why it's important for your success. This guide will also give you examples on how to set up the ideal teacher profile to attract the most students from your area. When used in the right way online teacher directories are an excellent source of new students and can bring you students for years and years. If you haven't already set up profiles on a few directories then read through this guide or you'll be missing out!

What are online teacher directories?

Online teacher directories are basically databases filled with teacher profiles for students to look through. If a student living in California, USA, wants to find a tutor, all they have to do is search for something like “guitar tutors in California” in Google and one of the results will most likely be a teacher directory. When they click on the link and are taken to the directory, they will be able to find tutors close to their area and read each tutor’s profile. The student can compare tutors, and contact any tutors they like the sound of by email or phone. If one tutor isn’t available, all they need to do is continue through the list until they find a tutor that can help them out.

BWS-01 What a Website Can Do For You

In this guide we will look at why you should have your own website to attract new students. If you want to be a successful guitar teacher today it's critical that you have a strong online presence with your own website. We will compare different ways students find guitar teachers and different ways teachers advertise.

Reach more potential students

There is one simple reason for starting a website to promote your lessons– you can reach more potential students. More and more people now use the Internet to find products and services, where they once would have used traditional directories such as the Yellow Pages. Most people looking for guitar tutors will use Google (or another search engine) as their first tool, before even considering looking at local business directories. When those potential students make that first search in Google, there will be one of two possible results:

Your website will show up in the results and the student will click your link, or,
Your competitor’s website will show up in the results and the student will click their link

While other online resources such as tutor directories may show your listing, it is more likely that a tutor’s website will be the first to rank in your area. If a potential student searches for “guitar tutors in [hometown]” and you don’t show up in the results, you may as well not exist. As time passes, a higher proportion of students are using the Internet to find tutors. Many tutors estimate over 80% of new student enquiries come from their own websites. That’s a significant proportion and can mean the difference between filling up your timetable and struggling to get a couple of students.
