Using an iPad in your lessons

The wide range of guitar and music apps available on the iPad make it a fantastic teaching tool. Check out TTL-04 to find out how you can use it in your guitar lessons. More

New teaching guide: Using an iPad as a teaching tool

A new teaching guide is available to help you use an iPad as a teaching tool. The popularity of Apple's iPad and the wide range of music/guitar related apps available means you now have a very powerful teaching tool to use in guitar lessons. Many guitar teachers use the iPad to create a richer learning experience away from the traditional book. The guide will walk through various apps and how you could use them in lessons.

While the guide is specifically for the iPad, other tablet devices such as Android or Windows tablets can be used with equal success. Think of the iPad simply as one possible tool you can use in your lessons. The best results always come when you use a wide range of materials and not rely on one single type of resource (eg: a method book). Combining the guitar lesson plans and worksheets available on this site with the iPad is a great way to keep your lessons fresh and keep your students interested.

The guide will be updated over time when new suitable methods and apps are identified.

TBP-01 Students not practicing

About this guide

Possibly the most frustrating aspect of teaching guitar is when your students don’t practice in-between lessons with you. It’s frustrating because it means you have to go over the same materials and you can’t push on to more complicated (and interesting) material. In this guide we will identify possible causes to the problem and how to deal with it.

New worksheet available: Chords in Lydian Mode

A new worksheet is available on the Lydian mode. The worksheet will require your student to figure out diatonic triads and seventh chords in the Lydian mode. This will reinforce the student's understanding of Lydian and help them apply the mode in their playing.

Access the worksheet here: WMO-04 Chords in Lydian Mode

More worksheets and lesson plans on the modes are available in the Lesson Materials Section.

WMO-04 Chords in Lydian Mode

About this worksheet

This worksheet will cover Lydian mode - the fourth mode of the major scale. Like the other mode worksheets, this one will teach your student to harmonize the mode using diatonic triads and seventh chords. This will give your student great practice in the theory involved and will help them understand the mode. After your student fully understands the intervals, chords and notes used in each Lydian mode, they will have an easier time applying the mode in their playing.

This worksheet will help your student:

  • Understand Lydian mode
  • Figure out diatonic triads and seventh chords
  • Understand the intervals in Lydian mode

This worksheet works best when combined with a guitar lesson plan on Lydian. See the related lesson below for more Lydian resources.
