SCE-03 F Major Scale Exercises

About this resource

This lesson plan will give your student various exercises on the F Major Scale. The exercises are designed to teach your student to really think about the notes used and to learn to expand the exercises to other areas of the fretboard.

The following exercises are included:

  • Straight up and down the fretboard
  • Thirds
  • Fourths
  • Fifths
  • Sixths
  • Sevenths
  • String Skipping
  • String by String

Once your student completes these exercises, ask them to try the exercises again starting in a different area of the fretboard. Playing the exercises as written is good, but once your student learns to take the concepts behind each exercise and apply that to new areas of the neck, they will start to develop.

The lesson plan uses a few examples to show how combining open chord shapes with open strings can create lush sounding chords. The Teacher's Guide will explain how you can use this lesson to teach the student how to come up with fresh chord progressions, understand why some positions work and others don't as well as simply teaching the student to experiment. Beginners will enjoy this lesson as it will increase the number of chords they feel comfortable with.

IMP-01 - Using Themes in Solos

BLU-04 Blues in Open G Tuning

This lesson will teach your student:

  • How to use Open G tuning
  • A couple bluesy ideas using the slide and fingers
  • Understanding of basic music theory used with the tuning and blues

It's recommended the student has practice with a slide before attempting this lesson. Although the slide is optional, it does add to the blues feel.

New business guide: When to say no to a prospective student

A new business guide is available to give you some information on when it may be better to say no to teaching a new student. The guide explains why many teachers feel they should teach 'anybody and everybody' and explains why that line of thinking can cause problems.

Access the guide here: BPL-11 When to say no to a prospective student

BPL-11 When to say no to a prospective student

About this guide

The reality of teaching guitar is that not all students are equal. Some students are a pleasure to deal with as they seem to follow every word you say and practice like crazy. Other students show up late, cancel lessons at short notice, don't practice, etc. You need to decide where you draw the line and say no to teaching students. Some teachers try to teach everybody and anybody, while other teachers realize that some students just aren't worth the headaches.
This guide will help you decide where to draw the line and prevent bad students from ruining the enjoyment you get out of teaching guitar.
