EXE-04 String Skipping Arpeggios

About this lesson

This lesson plan will teach your student how to properly use string skipping as well as the basics of arpeggios. These string skipping arpeggios are a great challenge for intermediate players. Depending on the current skill level of your student you can focus purely on the string skipping skill or you can spend some time explaining the theory behind arpeggios. The included lesson instructions will guide you through how to teach the material if you are unsure how to explain the concepts. Your students will love being able to play the string skipping arpeggios at a high tempo so it's worth spending the time learning.

About this lesson

Lydian is an interesting mode to learn as it's the only one that alters the fourth. It's used a lot by guitarists such as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, so if your student wants to learn that style of playing, this mode is a great one to focus on. Just like the other lessons on modes, this one included a detailed guide to help you teach it effectively.

About this lesson

Phrygian is the third of seven modes. It's recommended you teach the modes in order as it will make more sense to your student. After your student understands Ionian and Dorian (see related lessons) you can move on to Phrygian. This is a very exotic sounding mode and students will love it when they can improvise using it. Phrygian is used a lot in Flamenco so any students wanting to get a Spanish sound in their playing can learn this.

About this lesson

The Dorian mode is the second of seven modes and has a great sound. Most students will love the sound of Dorian and once they can improvise using this mode, they will start to understand why modes are so important to understand. Make sure your student fully understands the Ionian mode before learning Dorian as it's easier to teach modes starting from Ionian and working through each one.

About this lesson

Modes are extremely fun for students to apply once they understand them. It can be tough teaching modes as people have different ideas on how they should be used and many materials confuse the issue by going too deep into the theory. This lesson will explain how your student can apply the Ionian Mode. Theory is kept to a minimum but is still explained on the sheet if your student wants to learn more about it.

This series on modes will give your student a movable shape for each mode they can memorize so they don't have to worry about working out the notes every time they want to apply a mode. The included lesson instructions gives you a simple way to explain modes which focuses on how the mode is applied in it's simplest way

BBL-10 Songs on all six strings

About this lesson

This lesson is a great test to check if your student has properly understood all the previous lessons. The songs used cover all six strings so you will be able to see straight away which areas of the guitar your student needs more practice with. One of the songs introduces a sharp and another song tests whether your student can accurately pick the correct name of a chord played. Only give this material to your student if they have completed lessons BBL-01 to BBL-09.

RES-09 Blank Fretboard Diagrams

About this resource

This resource contains basic fretboard diagrams you can use to write down various scales or modes. Instead of giving your student the entire scale to learn, you could write out only a small area of the fretboard for them to focus on. Later on you can expand the notes in the diagram as the student progresses. You could even use this template as a test to see how well your student can figure out the positions of the notes. You could ask your student to 'map out the entire A minor Pentatonic Scale'. This is a great way to break out of the limiting 'box patterns' so many people get stuck using over and over.

There are many other uses for the diagrams and when appropriate, other lessons will refer to this resource if it will help you out.

PRA-02 Practice Session Breakdown

About this lesson

This template can be used to help your student plan out their practice sessions. When used the right way it will encourage your student to practice more often and to focus better when practicing. You can change things around and update the sheet over time when your student needs to move on to new things. This is a valuable tool as it is very hard to control your student's practice habits outside of lessons. The included instructions gives you two examples showing how you could fill the template out.
