PRA-01 Song Skillsheet

About this lesson plan

Songs are powerful tools you can use to teach students new skills while raising their motivation and inspiration. While it's common for teachers to think of songs as the end goal in the learning process, you can achieve better results by looking at songs differently. The guide TBE-03 explains how to use songs as tools in your lessons to teach your students quite a lot more than merely playing along to the song.

This template gives you a way to show your student what skills and topics they need to work on to be able to play songs they want to learn. Think of this template as a progress tracker for your student to see what they need to work on to play certain songs. Use it as a motivational tool as well as a way to give your students a clear idea on what they need to practice when at home.

EFX-02 Introduction to Slapback Delay

About this lesson

Delay is an essential effect for guitarists and a great way to understand how to use delay is to use a slapback delay. The slapback delay only repeats a signal once which is very useful for interesting rhythmic or harmonic effects. The exercises in this lesson plan will teach your student how to think about the delay's timing and to use it properly. Instead of randomly setting the delay, your student will learn to control the timing and mix and use it in creative ways.

EFX-01 Introduction to the Wah Pedal

About this lesson

The wah pedal (or wah-wah as it used to be called) is an extremely versatile effect that can allow your student to really add expression to their playing. As a guitar teacher it's simple to teach students how to use the wah and they can instantly hear how it changes their tone. The exercises in this lesson plan will teach your student the essential skills needed to properly control the wah pedal. Instead of randomly rocking it back and forth, your students will understand how to properly control it.

In addition to the standard rocking technique, the exercises demonstrate how to use the wah as a filter as well as how to use it to add emphasis to certain notes. After running through these exercises, your student will feel confident in using the wah pedal.

EXE-16 Rhythm Groupings

About this lesson

This lesson will teach your student how to recognize different rhythm patterns in songs. The exercises are designed to teach the student to think about certain groups of notes (eg: 3, 5, 6, etc.) and to be able to play any group of notes naturally. At first this can be difficult for beginners but the result is that the student will start to be able to figure out rhythm patterns by ear faster and easier. The exercises on the lesson plan also teach the student how to come up with their own rhythm patterns and to think about how they play each pattern.

This guitar lesson plan will teach your student:

  • How to think about rhythm
  • To play any group of notes naturally
  • Combine different rhythm groups to form complicated rythyms
  • Practice strumming chords

Advanced students will also benefit from this lesson plan as it will help them identify any weaknesses in their rhythm sense or skills. All students will benefit from being able to play these exercises.
